# Area Chart Linear

A single filled area whose points are joined by straight segments instead of a smoothed curve.

Area Chart Linear is an open-source chart from suiss/ui for React, React Native, SwiftUI and Jetpack Compose. The @esuiss/ui CLI copies its source into your project, so you own the code.

**React**

**Example**

```tsx title="components/charts/area-chart-linear.tsx"
"use client"
import { Area, AreaChart, CartesianGrid, XAxis } from "recharts"
import {
  Card,
  CardContent,
  CardDescription,
  CardHeader,
  CardTitle,
} from "@/components/ui/card"
import {
  type ChartConfig,
  ChartContainer,
  ChartTooltip,
  ChartTooltipContent,
} from "@/components/ui/chart"
const chartData = [
  { month: "January", desktop: 186, mobile: 80 },
  { month: "February", desktop: 305, mobile: 200 },
  { month: "March", desktop: 237, mobile: 120 },
  { month: "April", desktop: 173, mobile: 190 },
  { month: "May", desktop: 209, mobile: 130 },
  { month: "June", desktop: 264, mobile: 140 },
]
const chartConfig = {
  desktop: { label: "Desktop", color: "var(--chart-1)" },
} satisfies ChartConfig
export function AreaChartLinear() {
  return (
    <Card variant="filled" size="sm">
      <CardHeader>
        <CardTitle>Linear</CardTitle>
        <CardDescription>Points joined by straight lines</CardDescription>
      </CardHeader>
      <CardContent>
        <ChartContainer
          config={chartConfig}
          className="aspect-auto h-48 w-full"
        >
          <AreaChart
            accessibilityLayer
            data={chartData}
            margin={{ top: 10, right: 12, left: 12, bottom: 0 }}
          >
            <CartesianGrid vertical={false} strokeDasharray="2 4" />
            <XAxis
              dataKey="month"
              tickLine={false}
              axisLine={false}
              tickMargin={8}
              interval={0}
              tickFormatter={(value: string) => value.slice(0, 3)}
            />
            <ChartTooltip content={<ChartTooltipContent indicator="line" />} />
            <Area
              dataKey="desktop"
              type="linear"
              stroke="var(--color-desktop)"
              strokeWidth={2}
              fill="var(--color-desktop)"
              fillOpacity={0.18}
            />
          </AreaChart>
        </ChartContainer>
      </CardContent>
    </Card>
  )
}
```

One series filled under straight line segments instead of a smoothed curve. Prefer it to the default when smoothing would suggest values between points that were never measured.

## Installation

### CLI

```bash title="Terminal"
npx shadcn@latest add @esuiss/area-chart-linear
```

Works in any project with a `components.json`. See [Installation](https://ui.suiss.app/docs/installation#add-components) for the one-line registry setup. Or use the suiss/ui CLI:

```bash title="Terminal"
npx @esuiss/ui@latest add charts area-chart-linear
```

### Manual

1. Install the dependencies:

```bash title="Terminal"
npm install recharts
```

2. Add the pieces it builds on: [Card](https://ui.suiss.app/docs/components/card), [Chart](https://ui.suiss.app/docs/components/chart).

3. Copy the source into `components/charts/area-chart-linear.tsx`:

```tsx title="components/charts/area-chart-linear.tsx"
"use client"
import { Area, AreaChart, CartesianGrid, XAxis } from "recharts"
import {
  Card,
  CardContent,
  CardDescription,
  CardHeader,
  CardTitle,
} from "@/components/ui/card"
import {
  type ChartConfig,
  ChartContainer,
  ChartTooltip,
  ChartTooltipContent,
} from "@/components/ui/chart"
const chartData = [
  { month: "January", desktop: 186, mobile: 80 },
  { month: "February", desktop: 305, mobile: 200 },
  { month: "March", desktop: 237, mobile: 120 },
  { month: "April", desktop: 173, mobile: 190 },
  { month: "May", desktop: 209, mobile: 130 },
  { month: "June", desktop: 264, mobile: 140 },
]
const chartConfig = {
  desktop: { label: "Desktop", color: "var(--chart-1)" },
} satisfies ChartConfig
export function AreaChartLinear() {
  return (
    <Card variant="filled" size="sm">
      <CardHeader>
        <CardTitle>Linear</CardTitle>
        <CardDescription>Points joined by straight lines</CardDescription>
      </CardHeader>
      <CardContent>
        <ChartContainer
          config={chartConfig}
          className="aspect-auto h-48 w-full"
        >
          <AreaChart
            accessibilityLayer
            data={chartData}
            margin={{ top: 10, right: 12, left: 12, bottom: 0 }}
          >
            <CartesianGrid vertical={false} strokeDasharray="2 4" />
            <XAxis
              dataKey="month"
              tickLine={false}
              axisLine={false}
              tickMargin={8}
              interval={0}
              tickFormatter={(value: string) => value.slice(0, 3)}
            />
            <ChartTooltip content={<ChartTooltipContent indicator="line" />} />
            <Area
              dataKey="desktop"
              type="linear"
              stroke="var(--color-desktop)"
              strokeWidth={2}
              fill="var(--color-desktop)"
              fillOpacity={0.18}
            />
          </AreaChart>
        </ChartContainer>
      </CardContent>
    </Card>
  )
}
```

4. Update the import paths to match your project.

## Usage

```tsx
import { AreaChartLinear } from "@/components/charts/area-chart-linear"
```

```tsx
<AreaChartLinear />
```

Replace `chartData`, update each `dataKey` to your field names and rename the `chartConfig` entry to set the label and color. Everything else matches the default area chart.

## Notes

Keyboard users can focus the plot and step through the months with the arrow keys.

The same one-series area as the default chart, with `type="linear"` so each month connects to the next with a straight segment. It has a month axis, a dashed grid and a tooltip with a line indicator.

## Installation

**React Native**

```bash title="Terminal"
npx shadcn@latest add @esuiss-rn/area-chart-linear
```

See [Installation](https://ui.suiss.app/docs/installation) for the `components.json` setup. Or use the suiss/ui CLI:

```bash title="Terminal"
npx @esuiss/ui@latest add area-chart-linear
```

**SwiftUI**

```bash title="Terminal"
npx @esuiss/ui@latest add area-chart-linear --platform swift
```

**Jetpack Compose**

```bash title="Terminal"
npx @esuiss/ui@latest add area-chart-linear --platform kotlin
```

The CLI also adds what it builds on: [Card](https://ui.suiss.app/docs/components/card), [Chart](https://ui.suiss.app/docs/components/chart).
